MUMBAI, March 28: Host Central Railway (CR) lost an important tie to South Eastern Railway (SER) by a solitary goal in a Group C match in the 5th All India Railway football tournament here at the Cooperage, today.

In the other high scoring match today, last year’s winners Western Railway (WR) drubbed Recruitment Board, (RB) Delhi 8-0.

The match winner from South Eastern captain Tajjudin came in the 70th minute when he connected a cross from substitute Mohmaad Haque. Haque substitute for L Chaterjee dribbled past couple of defender on the left and send a floater. SER captain positioned himself and placed his header neatly to the right of R Khanolkar.

Central strikers Asif Jamal and Arshad Ansari were guilty of not capitalising on the chances came their way.

The match started at fast pace as both teams wanted to secure their place for quarter-finals. Central dominated the first-half but despite having some scoring chances failed to find the net. Jamal’s free-kick in the 34th minute through the wall wassaved by SER custodian S Chowdhary.

The custodian stretched to his right and punched away the ball. Jamal also had a simple chance in the later half on Amit Loltikar’s cross. Loltikar’s solo effort from the left saw Jamal’s header flew over the bar.

After the breather, SER were a changed team. They were playing more controlled and attacking game. Two minute past breather, L Chatterjee after a solo could have swelled the net but his shot away from the target. In the first match, WR had no difficulty in surpassing RB. They pumped in eight against the team from Delhi who had two former Railway players.

Kaushik Pal drew the first blood (20th) and third (40th) for his team. Medio Raman Verma scored the second. Sunil Mishra was the highest scorer for the Mumbai team as he scored three. Siraj Hussain and Jose Daya scored a goal each
