At least three people were killed and more than twenty wounded, eight of them seriously, as series of bomb explosions rocked the capital on Sunday. Eight of those wounded include school students who were waiting to board a bus. A little known outfit —Terai army—claimed responsibility for the attack in a call to Katmandu’s Avenue TV station. However, the claim could not be immediately verified, and there was widespread speculation in Katmandu that the attack was the work of a larger, more capable force. Officials had earlier reported four blasts, but later said the attack near army headquarters, which first appeared to be two bombings, was actually one.Despite the ongoing peace process with the Maoist rebels, who last year joined the government after a decade of fighting, there have been repeated outbreaks of violence in southern Nepal over the past year with at least 60 people killed in clashes between security forces and ethnic minority groups who say their region has been sidelined in favour of the more populated, mountainous north.
