
Seven out of seven. It couldn’t have got better than this for India with three more gold medals coming their way on the conluding day of the tennis competition of the Afro-Asian Games here. Saturday’s gold medals came in the men’s singles, mixed doubles and the women’s doubles at the SAAP Tennis Stadium.
Saturday’s results (all gold for India): Vijay Kannan beat Johny Arcilla 6-1, 6-1; Rushmi Chakravarthi/Sania Mirza beat Maya Rosa Ariana/Septi Nidya 7-6, 6-3; Mahesh Bhupathi/Sania Mirza beat Vishal Uppal/Sania Mirza.
Such was the standard of tennis at this event that playing indifferent tennis doubles star Mahesh Bhupathi won two gold for his efforts. Sania Mirza was draped in gold medals. Four to be exact. Rohan Bopanna didn’t bother to play the singles and the hard-working Kannan baged the gold beating Joseph Victorino, who didn’t deserve to even qualify.
Akhil, Jitender win gold, silver for Qamar
Akhil Kumar and Jitender Kumar emerged winners in flyweigt 51-kg category and light-heavyweight 81-kg category respectively while five other boxers had to settle for silver. Those to finish second were Md Ali Qamar, who was upset by Busan Asian Games silver medalist Philippines Harry S Tanamor in light-fly 48-kg, Diwakar Prasad in bantam 54-kg category, A L Lakra in feather weight 57-kg category, Vijender in welterweight 64-kg category and V Johnson in heavyweight 91-kg category.
Face-saving silver for Sumati
Commonwealth Championship medallist Sumati Devi staged a remarkable comeback to give India a face-saving bronze in the women’s 75-kg category in the weightlifting event on the last day today. The 22-year-old Sumati cleared a combined 217.5 kgs (97.5 in snatch, 120 in jerk) to win the bronze behind Yang Houqin of China and Ijeoma Nwatu of Nigeria.
