In the past, sex-testing were done at international championships, involving a swab in the cheek of the mouth to determine sexuality but the test were not mandatory at the Commonwealth Games and the rules were relaxed at Olympic Games since the 1976 Montreal Olympics when Princess Anne — a member of the British equestrian team — was the only athlete not tested. But still the IOC conducted highly controversial tests involving chromosome testing prior to the start of Olympic competition to check the gender of certain athletes. The screenings were launched decades ago after allegations were made that male athletes were impersonating women. However for the 2000 Olympics, the IOC stopped the screenings after research showed that not all women have “standard” female chromosomes.
