Chandigarh, March 29: With England expressing its inability to host the 2000 World Cup for under-15 in October, the School Games Federation of India has accepted the responsibility of playing hosts. However, the SGFI will organise the World Cup in 2001.

Confirming this, SGFI president CL Negi said, “Any country will need time to organise a world meet. Getting sponsors and making proper arrangements are the two main things which require time and planning.”

“The federation will approach top sports administrator Inderjit Singh Bindra, former president of Board of Control for Cricket in India and president of Punjab Cricket Association, for his guidance and support,” said Negi.

Meanwhile, the Asian Schools Table Tennis Championships for boys and girls will be held from July 14 to 17 in Hong Kong. The SGFI president said the federation had accepted the invitation for participation.

The SGFI has planned two coaching camps before India’s participation in the Hong Kong meet. The first camp will be held from April 15 to May 15 and the second from June 15 to July 8. Both camps will be organised at NIS Patiala.

The SGFI will conduct the Asian Schools Hockey. This meet has been allotted to the Punjab Education Department. Negi said the venue would be decided by Punjab. It be organised in October either in Ludhiana or Amritsar.

India, Korea, China, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Brunie will compete for the top honours. The federation has sent special invitation to Pakistan and Bangladesh. Both countries are not members of the Asian School Games Federation.
