CHANDIGARH, Oct 12: In an encounter which last more than two-hours, SGGS College, Sector 26, Chandigarh outclassed Government College, Ludhiana 15-8, 9-15, 7-15, 15-7, 15-10, to win the title in the Panjab University Inter-College men’s volleyball championship which concluded at PU Campus here today. Govt College, Ludhiana got the second position in the meet.

SGGS’s trio of Anil, Surinder and seasoned Suresh manned the defence line so well that it proved to a be strong weapon which enabled them to overpower their rivals, who at one point of time in the game threatened to walk away with the day’s honours. At a crucial juncture, however, Ludhiana’s defence wilted under pressure and gave away vital points.

On the other hand SGGS’s back court proved a tough nut to crack and constantly fed the attackers.

Though, SGGS began on a winning note and pocketed the first set (15-8). The team had a set-back in the next two sets. They lost the rhythm and the sets too (9-15, 7-15).

Down by 1-2, SGGS’s attackers came up a with telling smashes in the fourth set, which not only gave a harrowing time to the opponents but also brought the team back on the winning track (2-2). Gagan in particular gave a splendid display of his skill. With his drop shots and powerful smashes, he breached the rival defence. The hard hitting spiker was ably supported by Ajay and Surinder who excelled at the net.

In the decider, SGGS spikers faced stiff resistance from Ludihana’s team, who were in a no mood to give up. Ludhiana’s Rajbarinder Singh and Gurpreet Singh combined well and scored three points in quick succession (7-8). But at this juncture Ludhiana’s players lost their cool which proved their doing. They even argued with the referee in the dying moments of the contest.

Rajbarinder faltered at crucial juncture and gave away three vital points (9-13). While SGGS’s players maintained their cool and Gagan spiked hard to win two vital points and gave his team the title (15-10).

In another match Government College, Hoshiarpur beat PU Campus 1315, 15-7, 15-7, 15-10, to win the third place.

After the SGGS-Ludhiana tie, the latter resorted to violence and man-handled one of the SGGS’s supporter.

National baseball
Chandigarh boys and girls teams won their league matches in the 10th junior national baseball championship being played at SD Senior Secondary School in Sector 24, under the aegis of Baseball Association of Chandigarh. Chandigarh beat Bihar in the boys group while blanked Tamil Nadu 7-0 in the girls section.

Boys: Andhra Pradesh bt Orrisa 12-0; Punjab bt Maharashtra 11-1; Madhya Pradesh bt Orrisa 10-0; AP bt Haryana 12-7; Delhi bt Himachal Pradesh 5-2.
Girls: Rajasthan lost to Punjab 10-13.

Rahul Sood and Ekta became the fastest runners in the boys and girls section respectively in the Bharitya Vidya Bhavan-27 annual athletics meet for class 10 to 12.

Rajat shines
Rajat Bhandari’s fine knock of 63 runs enabled Government Model School-35 beat SD Public School-32 by 23 runs in the cricket tournament for Shivalik Trophy today.

Brief Scores: Govt Model School-35: 192 for 9 in 25 overs (Rajat 63, Vikramjit Singh 22, Ankur 19, Saurabh 3 for 27, Anandit 2 for 33); SD School-32: 169 for 8 in 25 overs (Harit Sharma 76, Harinder Singh 23, Anandit 30, Balbir 3 for 24, Vikramjit 3 for 35).

Volleyball tourney
The Chandigarh state sub-junior volleyball championship in boys and girls section would be held on October 21 and 22 at Shivalik Public School-41.

Players born on or after January 1, 1983 are eligible to take part in the meet. During the tournament City team in both the boys and girls group would be selected for the forthcoming nationals to be held at Cuttack in November.Entries close with Suresh Kumar (coach) on October 20 at Sector 7 Sports Complex.

Shooting ball meet
The All India shooting ball meet will be held at Government College, Ropar from November 1, according to a press release, teams from Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh are participating in the meet.The matches will be played on league-cum-knock out.
