MUMBAI, Jan 27: Half centuries by opener Soham Dalvi and southpaw Abhishek Nair, and their unbroken 115-run partnership for the third wicket, helped Shardashram English coast to an eight-wicket victory over holders IES V N Sule Guruji in the semi-finals of the MSSA-Colgate Inter-School Harris Shield cricket tournament (75 overs) at Matunga, today.

Shardashram entered the final after a gap of one year. They will meet last year’s runner-up Balmohan Vidyamandir.

short article insert IES, who batted first, were restricted to 139 with opener Vishal Tiwrekar contributing a stylish 53 (7×4). Off-spinner Sameer Shaikh was the wrecker-in-chief with five for 26 in 14 overs. He was supported by the other offie Kaushal Dongre, who finished with three for 14.

IES had better luck in the Giles Shield as they defeated Vidyamandir, Dahisar, by ten wickets to enter the semi-finals.

Holders IES did well to dismiss Vidyamandir for 156 after they were 54-1 at one stage. Leg-spinner Rohan Amladi (4-44) and off-spinner Shaunak Gupte (3-31) didthe damage.

IES openers Kinjal Patel and Bravish Shetty then batted freely to add 158 runs for the first wicket and saw their side through.

Patel’s innings of 72 had 11 fours, while Shetty’s 69 was studded with ten boundaries.

Akshda Parab excels

A six-wicket haul by new ball bowler Akshda Parab helped CD Barfiwala record their third win in the MSSA-Colgate Inter-School girls cricket league at Azad Maidan today. Akshda had remarkable figures of 6-2-11-6 as Barfiwala defeated Bombay International by nine wickets. This was the second time Barfiwala dismissed their opponents for a score under30.

Brief scores: Bombay International 22 in 12 overs (Akshada Parab 6-11, Kalpita Dighe 2-1) lost to C D Barfiwala 25-1 in 3.1 overs.

Jhunjhunwala recover

The eighth and ninth wicket pairs added 92 runs, as Jhunjhunwala recovered to a respectable 301 on the first day of the Inter-collegiate cricket semi-final against Narsee Monjee at Matunga here today.

Left-hander Praful Mahajan (43) was involved in both stands, adding 42 and 50 respectively with Om Prakash Tiwari and Hitendra Katkar.

Shetty’s ton props UBI

A splendid unbeaten century by captain Harish Shetty helped last year’s runner-up Union Bank post a respectable 262 against Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers (RCF) on the first day of the Times Shield B Division cricket final at the Parsee Gymkhana today.

Put into bat, Union Bank soon lost three wickets for 26 runs. The fourth wicket pair of opener Ajit Kolte (35, 6×4) and Shetty added 68 runs before Kolte was lbw to left-arm spinner Rajesh Prabhudesai.

Shetty, who was going strong at one end, then put on 61 runs for the eighth wicket with Rupam Malaviya (32). Shetty’s unbeaten innings was studded with three sixes and 14 boundaries.

Medium-pacer Sameer Inamdar, who caused the early dent, took three wickets for 69, while off-spinner Thakur finished with 3-49.

RCF too lost their first wicket on the first ball of the innings when Yogesh Patil was caught behind off medium-pacer Manish Sakhalkar. Jaywant slams tonAn attacking century by Deep Jaywant (101, 1×6, 13×4) helped Sun-Grace Mafatlal score 213 against Western Railway in the KC Mahindra Memorial Invitational cricket tournament today. At close of play, the railwaymen were 45-3.

A four-wicket haul by medium-pacer Swapnil Hazare helped Elf Lubricants bowl out Air-India for 159. In reply, Elf were 106 for 3,thanks to Sachin Deshmukh’s 50.
