CHANDIGARH, Jan 14: The two-day Theatre Festival organised by the Haryana Urdu Sahitya Academy in collaboration with the Director, Public Relations, Haryana opened today at Tagore Theatre.

The inaugural play presented by the IPTA, Saharanpur, Arey Sharif Log!, was written by Jaywant Dalwi and directed by Amber Salim.

The play is set in the lower middle class locality and develops as a young, beautiful girl rents a room on the ground floor of a three-storeyed building. The life of the sharif old and young people of the locality starts revolving around the new tenant and her engagements, upsetting the wives of the sharif old men for obvious reasons.

The narrative of the play was poor and the stage was left empty for long pauses, totally against the ethics of the stage. Many characters were weakly portrayed and faltered while delivering dialogues. However, Inam-ul-Haq, portraying Dr Ghatak, stole the show as he fully justified the comic yet real life character played by him.

The play dragged on at times but was able to express the real lives of sharif log in a light yet informative manner.
