HISAR, July 13: While successive annual budgets of every university in the country usually show an upward trend, thanks to government grants, Guru Jambheshwar University is moving in the reverse direction.

The university received government grants of Rs 9.71 crore during 1995-96 which decreased to Rs 7.70 crore during 1996-97. Its share of grants during 1997-98 was only Rs 5.64 crore.

University faculty members today called on Health Minister O. P. Mahajan and urged him to ask Chief Minister Bansi Lal to strengthen the university’s financial position. Mahajan said he would call on the Chief Minister along with other ministerial colleagues.

About 70 faculty members and employees of the university also called on Haryana Governor Mahabir Prasad at Chandigarh today and submitted a memorandum seeking his intervention on the issue.

It is being said that while demands for introducing new technical courses and increasing number of seats in various courses being run by the university are gaining ground, the government is allegedly weakening the university by continuously decreasing budgetary allocations and delaying financial assistance.pSome say that the university’s bad days began when the present HVP-BJP government came to power in the state. Earlier, all regional and technical institutions in Haryana were affiliated to the university, in addition to academic colleges in Hisar, Bhiwani, Jind and Sirsa. But this position was reportedly reversed by the state government on July 25 and 26. Now the faculty members fear that its jurisdiction may be curtailed through a government notification.
