Shikhar Dhawan has been named the new skipper of the Delhi Ranji team for the one-dayers. His elevation to the post came after skipper Virender Sehwag was picked for the Indian team for the series against Sri Lanka while vice-captain Gautam Gambhir refused captaincy for the present moment due to personal reasons.

The senior selection committee chose the 21-year old above another captaincy candidate and senior all-rounder Rajat Bhatia with keeping an eye on the future.

Speaking to The Indian Express, chairman Atul Wassan said, “Rajat was very close to making it but we weren’t so sure whether that would be a long-term plan. So we decided to hand it over to Shikhar. He’s a young guy, almost got the India cap a couple of seasons back and we wanted give him (Shikhar) extra confidence by handing over the charge. We had big names in the team but the results weren’t coming, so there was no point in going backwards. We wanted to shake things up a bit,” he said.
