Indian Gym event draws 32 teams

  • The Third under-14 Indian Gymkhana Cricket Academy Tournament, to be played here between May 12-24, has attracted 32 teams from all over Mumbai.
  • "The first phase will have 32 teams in the fray. Phase two will be pruned to 16 of eight teams each leading into the semi-final and final," K Satyamurthy, the brainchild of the academy and the guiding force behind the tournament.

    At stake in the tournament, sponsored by UM Khona and the Lapsia Trust, is prizes worth Rs 30,000, besides a certificate of merit for every participant.

    Matches will be held at the Shivaji Park ground, Matunga Gymkhana and Indian Gymkhana. Matches will be of 30-overs limit a side. No bowler will be able to bowl more than six overs in an innings.

    Following are the participating teams: Indian Gymkhana, Bandy XI, Jadhav XI, Surekha Bhandare CC, Ramakant Achrekar XI, Kamath XI, Hadkar XI, Dadar Club, Dadar Parsee Zorastrians, Almighty Cricketers, Young Maharashtra, Dadar Parsee Colony,Mahim Juveniles, PNBCC, Pravin XI, Ravi Churi Sports Club, Shrima Gymkhana, Juhu Parle Gymkhana, Kshatriya Samaj CC, Kiran Ashar Sports, Morning CC, Evershine CC, Tilak Nagar CC, Bharat CC, Sammy XI, Worli Sports, Air-India SC, RMG CC, SB Sports, Parsi Pioneer, Don Bosco (Matunga) and V Pandit SC.

    National Karate from today

  • The eighth National Karate Championship of Okinawa Martial Arts Academy will be held at Mahabaleshwar from May 10-13.
  • About 1,500 karatekas from 14 states will be taking part in the four-day championship, an official-sanctioned event of the World Karate Association.

    Rodrigues, Priyadarshini to lead teams

  • Robin Rodrigues of Mumbai Central and Priyadarshini Patil of Thane will lead Maharashtra boys and girls teams for the 25th National sub-junior basketball championships to be held in Pondicherry from May 14 to 18.
  • The teams: Boys: Robin Rodrigues (capt, Mumbai Central), Shafiullah Shaikh (Mumbai South-West), Vivek Shetty (Mumbai North), MalayKahnwalkar (Nasik), Suraj Bhosale (Latur), Mohammed Faisal, Athar Shaikh, Mashar Khan, Shohbas Shaikh, Mohammed Rais (All From Mumbai South East), Karan Mehta and Nikhil Kanitkar (both from Pune).

    Coach: Sayyed Rasool; Manager: Hamadto Fathi.

    Girls: Priyadarshini Patil (capt), Rucha Marathe, Madhura Bodas, Sonali Shetye (all from Thane), Ankita Varma, Priyanka Sareen, Rakhee Ranka (all from Pune), A Anasuya and N Chincholkar (both from Nagpur), Dhanashree Nagre (Satara), Namrata Ujagare (Kolhapur) and Reena Balkrishnan (Mumbai Central).

    Rhinos pip Cafe Royal in MDFA opener

  • Amit Kokate scored the match winner in the Rhino Sports Club 2-1 win against Cafe Royal in the inaugural match of Air-India trophy organised byMumbai District Football Association played at the St Xavier’s ground, today. Leroy Nunes put Rhino SC ahead in the 15th minute when his shot from top of the box found the net. After the interval,Sanjay Munde scored the equaliser for the winners after the Rhino’s custodian fumbled on a pass. Then, Kokate scored the match winner minutes before the final whistle.
