Adam Gilchrist and Justin Langer batted Australia to an extraordinary four-wicket victory over Pakistan to defy history and win the second cricket Test and the series at Bellerive Oval on Sunday. The two West Australian left-handers demoralised the Pakistanis with centuries and a record partnership to achieve the third highest winning target in Test cricket — and confirm Australia’s status as the unofficial world champions in the Test arena.
Indian pair loses
For the second time in two months, Canadian Sebastien Lareau and American Alex O’Brien defeated top-ranked Indians Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes for a major championship. Lareau and O’Brien claimed their first ATP Tour World Doubles Championship yesterday by making quick work of Bhupathi and Paes 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.
India in semis
Asian Games gold medallist India stormed into the semifinals of the Asia Cup hockey beating Hong Kong 5-0 in a Pool B match after hosts Malaysia had struggled against Japan before making it to the last four stage in Kuala Lumpr today.
Sachin confident
A confident captain Sachin Tendulkar today said his team would give hundred per cent to come out triumphant on the cricket tour of Australia. On the eve of the team’s departure, Tendulkar told reporters in Mumbai the team was a mixture of youth and experience and he was confident of getting good results.
Athletes of century
Carl Lewis, winner of a record nine Olympic gold medals, and Fanny Blankers-Koen, who won four Olympic golds at the 1948 London Games, have been named athletes of the century. They received the awards from Prince Albert of Monaco at a gala dinner organised by the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF).
Roma shock Lazio
Lazio, reckoned by many to be Europe’s top team, lost 4-1 to local rivals as Roma but still kept their lead in the Italian first division on goal difference despite Sunday’s stunning defeat. In Spain, Barcelona slipped to their third successive defeat.
