
Bailey’s back, miss for El Guerrouj
Olympic champion Donovan Bailey is coming back. After victory in last Saturday’s IAAF permit meeting in Barcelona, Bailey repeated his performance in the IAAF Grand Prix meeting "Gaz de France" in Paris. The Canadian won the 100m in 10.02s on a damp evening, ahead of Ato Boldon (10.10) of Trinidad & Tobago and Namibian Frank Fredericks (10.11).
Atheles for WC
Gulab Chand, 5000m silver medallist in the Asian Championships at Fukuoka (Japan) this month and the 4x100m relay gold medal winning women’s team have been selected by the Asian Amateur Athletic Association to represent the continent for the IAAF World Cup to be held at Johannesburg from September 11 to 13.
Eves’ hockey
The 49th Senior Women’s National hockey championship will be held in Chennai after the 16th Commonwealth Games, according to Vidya Stokes, president Indian Women’s Hockey Federation.
Mukesh’s denial
India’s right winger Mukesh Kumar, who has come in for bitter criticism on his style of play by V Baskaran, has expressed surprise at the National coach’s outbursts in his report to the Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) recently. “I was surprised to read Mr Baskaran’s report against me. It was a collective failure at the Utrecht World Cup,” said Mukesh Kumar.
Indo-Aussie opener
India clash with Australia in their opening match in Group A of the hockey tournament of the 16th Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur in September. Though the Games are scheduled to officially open on September 11, hockey begins two days early from September 9.
Henman wins
Second-seeded Briton Tim Henman outlasted an ill-tempered Jeff Tarango last night to reach the quarter-finals of the ATP Tour tournament. Henman, ranked 12th in the world and playing his first tournament since he reached the Wimbledon semi-finals.
