International footballer Anthony Fernandes dead

  • Former international footballer Anthony Fernandes died last Saturday following a brief illness. He was 59.
    Fernandes had been hospitalised for about 15 days and the death came after his discharge, family sources said.
    After playing a few seasons for Salgaocar in Goa, Fernandes, a half-back, came to Mumbai in 1962 to join the Tata Sports Club, where he was employed till his death.
    Fernandes represented India in the 1965 Mardeka Football Festival in Malaysia and was also part of the Maharashtra team when it won the Santosh Trophy in 1962.
