SRAM secretary might be asked to step down

The secretary of the Squash Rackets Association of Maharashtra (SRAM), Manan Mashruwala, who was in the eye of a storm with the state squash players accusing him of irresponsible behaviour towards the game and players, would be replaced soon.

Subhash Wali, SRAM committee member, told PTI here today that the SRAM president Vaman Apte, who met the players and the committee members here yesterday, agreed in principle to replace Mashruwala.

The president of the Squash Racket Federation of India (SRFI), KC Mehra and renowned coach Rehmat Khan of Pakistan were also present at the meeting which was attended by players including former junior national champion Paul Ferriera and Akhil Behl, juniors Rohan Juneja, Gaurav Juneja, Neeraj Shirgaonkar and Abhijit Kukreja, Wali said.

The players also discussed the SRFI’s method of selecting the Indian teams for various international tournaments and Delhi squash player Udai Singh’s omission from the Chennai camp which concluded recently, he added.

Singh was the runner-up in the recently concluded Senior Nationals.The executive committee meeting of the SRFI is scheduled to be held here on August 4, Wali said.

Degra to miss Asian, World trials

n Former amateur world champion Premchand Degra will skip the selection trials for the Asian and World Bodybuilding Championships to be held here on July 12.

Indian Body Building Federation secretary Madhav Pujari said here on Tuesday that an 11-member Indian team will be selected for the Asian junior (2), Senior (8) and Masters (1) event to be staged in Seoul, South Korea from October 24 to 28 and world championship at Prague (Czech Republic) from November 5 to 10.

For the Saturday trials, 24 of the country’s best senior body builders, including Prasad kumar, K Mohanan, E J Biju (all Services) and Nagesh Prasad, Sunil Aptekar and A K Rari (all Railways), Vitender Singh (Jagjit Textiles) and Shrikant Bangera and Shivakumar (both Maharashtra) have been invited. Mr India Prakash Koyande will miss the event due to a back problem.

Top stars for Shastri benefit

Top cricket stars, including Indian skipper Sachin Tendulkar and vice captain Anil Kumble would take part in the Padam Shastri benefit match at Jodhpur on October 16.

The honourary secretary of the benefit match committee, Prakash Kelkar, told PTI here today that others to be seen in action include former India skipper Mohammed Azharuddin, middle order batsman Rahul Dravid, left handed batsman Vinod Kambli and youngster Gagan Khoda.

The benefit tie for the former Rajashtan Ranji Trophy player would be organised by the Jodhpur District Cricket Association (JDCA), he added.

MSSA to hold football clinic

The Mumbai Schools Sports Association will be organising a football clinic to educate the sports directors, coaches and players on the latest amendments to the laws of football on July 11 at 10.00 a.m. at the University Stadium, Marine Lines.

The Inter-schools football tournament will be held from July 16 and the participating schools are requested to collect a copy of the fixtures from the MSSA office, Azad Maidan.

MDFA referees invited

The referees affiliated to the Mumbai District Football Association wishing on officiate in the football matches conducted by the Mumbai Schools Sports Association (MSSA) should report to the MSSA office before july 14.
