Sixteen bogies of a Dahanu-bound shuttle train derailed between Palghar and Boisar on the Western Railway (WR) at 6.40 am, disrupting rail services on the Mumbai-Delhi route. One person was severely injured while 30 others sustained minor injuries.

The derailment led to the cancellation of the Saurashtra Express 9215, Firozpur Express 9023 and Vapi Passenger 245. The Gujarat Express 9011 was terminated at Virar, while the Swaraj Express and Pashchim Express were diverted via Vasai, Jalgaon, and Surat.

Officials said the shuttle derailed due to a rail fracture. It left Bandra Terminus at 4.45 am and was running at 70-80 kmph when it suddenly lurched on bridge 135. But the driver rather than using the emergency brakes, tried to slow down. The train dragged on for almost 800 metre, damaging the bridge in the process. While all bogies were on the Down track, three of them climbed on to the Up track, blocking services on that side as well.
