NEW DELHI, JUNE 11: A fine brace by Railway’s mid-fielder Shyam Kumar enabled last year’s runners-up Northern Railway to edge past star-studded Oriental Bank of Commerce 2-1 to enter the final of the DSA-OBC Institutional football league championship at Ambedkar Stadium here today.
Northern Railway now await the winners of the second semi-final match to be played tomorrow between last year’s champions Food Corporation of India (North Zone) and Delhi Audit.
Oriental Bank of Commerce started the game at a fast pace and in the 26th second of the game, their striker Sanjeev Sharma put his side ahead 1-0 off a fine solo effort. This joy lived only upto the next minute when inside-left Shyam Kumar of Railways equalised the score in the second minute. Thereafter, the game was confined in the mid-way and no serious attempts were initiated by either side.
On Changing ends, Railways lads rejuvenated themselves and their mid-fielder Mohd. Atiq and Harish Bisht feeded well from both flanks but forwards Aftab Ashraf and Vimal Thapa could not capitalise the moves. Shyam Kumar scored the winning goal in the 68th minute from the left flank when defender Simon Peter gave a well-measured to unmarked Vimal Thapa who gave to Shyam Kumar who did not make any mistake in finding the net and sealed the fate of bankmen to enter in the final.
