Siddhuism on LS floor

Navjot Singh Siddhu tried to make the most of his reputation, but his maiden calling attention motion in the Lok Sabha on Monday was more bluster than substance. Expectations from the cricketer-turned-commentator were high, with Speaker Somnath Chatterjee stating at the outset: ‘‘We are waiting to hear ‘Sidhuisms’.’’ The BJP MP demanded early completion of the four-lane road from Jalandhar to Amritsar. The ‘Sidhuisms’ that stood out were — ‘‘there cannot be any fruit without the root’’ (any basic infrastructure needs a road), and ‘‘troubles and weeds thrive on lack of attention. So I am drawing his (the minister’s) attention’’.

MEDIA-MP SPORTS CONTEST

After hitting the bull’s eye with MPs on the recreation front, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad now has a plan for mediapersons. Buoyed by the success of his first sporting event for MPs held last week, Azad now wants a competition between MPs and journalists. While the sporting event is yet to be decided, shooting is certainly not on top of the agenda. While journalists may shoot from the hip, they certainly do not do so with a gun.
