MUMBAI, FEB 18: The special investigation and intelligence branch (SIIB) of Mumbai Customs has booked ten cases in this fiscal against importers of garlic who have been undervaluing or misdeclaring origin of goods. The cases have also been adjudicated.
In one typical case, 236 mt of garlic of Chinese origin was first brought to Hong Kong and then taken to Karachi, only to declare the origin as Pakistan. This is because from August 1, 1998, garlic, which was otherwise a restricted item was brought under OGL if the origin was a SAARC country. The movement of the cargo was traced from container numbers, prompting the importers to switch to country boats! Action against steel importers for undervaluation and misdeclaration, resulted in a recovery of Rs one crore in duty.
