Pamphlet wars
These days propoganda is a dirty word. But there was a time when it was a national effort. During the Second World War, the allied forces used propoganda to motivate its countrymen to help in the war effort. In the US, posters were used make its citizens realise the importance of chipping in with their bit. The site of the National Archives and Records Administration of the US Government has put up some of these posters at nara.gov/exhall/powers/powers.html. The posters had two strong themes: to motivate and to evoke fear. The motivational poster inspired men and women to join the armed forces while the other underlined the dangers and horrors of the Nazi regime.
