In a guarded reaction to reports of controversial Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen’s return to the city, the West Bengal government on Friday said it had not heard from the Centre about the matter and added that the situation that compelled her to leave had not changed.

“I have read about it (Taslima’s reported return) in the newspaper today. We have not heard anything from Delhi yet,” state Home Secretary Asok Mohan Chakraborty told newsmen.

Last November, the state government forced Nasreen to leave the city and go to Rajasthan after a section of Muslims resorted to violence demanding her deportation on the plea that she had insulted Prophet Mohammed in her writings.

From Rajasthan Nasreen was brought to an undisclosed location near Delhi before being deported.

“I don’t think that the situation that made her leave the city has changed,” the Home Secretary said.

Asked if the state government would allow the controversial writer to return to the city, Chakraborty said that the government would take a view after formally hearing from the Centre.
