YAVATMAL, July 2: The decision to merge six progressive villages to the Yavatmal Municipal Council (YMC) is likely to be announced within a month’s time. Minister of State for Urban Development, Planning and Finance Ravindra Mane gave an indication to this effect at a press conference held at the collectorate here during his recent visit to the town.

When asked about the criterion for the merger of six out of the 12 villages proposed earlier by the district administration, Mane said it would be done on the basis of the land brought under non-agricultural purposes. If 50 per cent the total village area is converted into non-agricultural land, it could be merged to the adjacent municipal council.

The proposal to merge 12 villages: Wadgaon, Lohara, Waghapur, Pangri, Pimpalgaon, Mogha, Darli, Dolamba, Bhosa, Godhani, Umarsara and Yavatmal Gramin, with the YMC was submitted to the State Government in 1992. The preliminary announcement to this effect was made on March 26, 1992 in the the government gazette. The gram panchayats and residents of these villages registered their protest against the arbitrary decision of the government and the proposal was later dumped in the cold storage. However, the government later ordered the district administration to submit a revised proposal for the feasibility of merging the peripheral villages of the town which had a population of over 1.10 lakh as per the 1991 census. The same has now crossed 1.50 lakh mark. After dropping six villages in the revised plan, the collector included Wadgaon, Lohara, Waghapur, Yavatmal Gramin, Pimpalgaon and Umarsara.
