MAY 26: In a surprise move, the state government has cancelled transfers of about 60 police officers. These officers, of the rank of inspector and deputy superintendent of police, were transferred on May 17.
Following an “urgent” order by the state home ministry on May 21, the state police headquarters aired a wireless message to all district police headquarters, cancelling the transfers with immediate effect.
The next day being a government holiday, the police headquarters was forced to issue a written order. Sources said it was the first time the government had quashed such large number of transfers ordered by the DGP. t. Senior officers feel that the state government has challenged the DGP’s authority to transfer his officers.
“It is like giving you something by one hand and taking it away with the other. Apart from meddling in investigations of serious cases, the politicians have now started to interfere in administrative matters also,” commented a bitter senior police officer.
