DECEMBER 24: The SNDT Women’s University today joined a programme with National Information System for Science and Technology for using information as a tool to improve productivity. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed by vice-chancellor Dr M A Varghese and secretary to Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), New Delhi, Dr R A Mashelkar, on the occasion of the university’s forty-seventh annual convocation.

Delivering his address as the chief guest for the convocation ceremony, Dr Mashelkar said, “The wealth of a nation today is not so much its material resources as its intellectual capital…Japan for example is considering a legislation to accept intellectual property as a security for loan.”

Safeguarding Indian Intellectual Property Rights through individual and institutional incentives is the pursuit of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Dr Mashelkar said. Dr Mashelkar is the youngest ever director of CSIR, the largest chain of research laboratories in the world. He said a change in attitudes was necessary to convert knowledge into wealth. Innovativeness in restructuring the school curriculum was a must, he said, as was the generation of better market potentialities for science personnel vis-a-vis management personnel. Students from arts, commerce and home science streams and those studying jewellery design and manufacture were awarded degrees and diplomas on the occasion.
