So much… and still they say it’s nothing

Unlike anybodyelse she seems determined to give meaning to her name i.e. Rakhi Rashmi (Knot and light). As it sounds any other neighbourhood would be having a girl answering to this ubiquitous name. But this girl along with her group has tied a knot to the lot of poor and uneducated children of the slums dwelling around the sprawling campus of the Jawaharlal Nehru University. And of course, as they spread rays of letters and care to ‘this’ otherwise dark and isolated zone flourishing in the vicinity of ‘Posh’ areas they swear unanimously ‘we do nothing at all’.

No doubt she answers to the call of Rakhi Rashmi who leads her quiet group of four students of International Relations who have come to JNU from various parts of the world.

“No we do not want our efforts to go public .Let it be our small endeavour for the sake of our own satisfaction” she speaks reluctantly as she points her finger to the other members of the group while disappearing into the thicket of malnourished kids once again.

Sara from Iran is even more conscious of people taking note of their philanthropic gesture. But what makes the girl from the middle east spend her time and energy in improving the plight of unknown lot and pat comes verbal response “These are just children like anywhere in the world and it doesn’t make any difference if they do not belong to Iran. I just love caring these unfortunate kids.”

Another sweet , bubbly girl Anna from Armenia quips in support of Sara “Please…. we are doing nothing. We just provide them meals on Sundays and teach them collectively whenever it is possible. Anybody, even you can come and join us in teaching these kids.”

It seems as if the whole world has come to bring light to the hitherto neglected dark patches of the developing nation.

As Wei Weik from Indonesia chirps out “I have come to study in this country but it(teaching the poor children) makes my life more meaningful and adds substance to my stay in this foreign land.”

The group is not complete without Abhiradi from Thailand. ‘Fon’ as she is fondly called by everyone known to her is literally the steering wheel of this big little group. It is her enthusiasm , never ending gusto and the perennial sparkle of her eyes that keeps all these humble workers on their toes. And what makes her do all this ‘It makes me happy when I spend a few hours with these kids’.

This international female brigade has also attracted M Fuzail Azami and Naresh Yadav practicing lawyers from Delhi to join their bandwagon in advocating the true faith of mankind to the unfortunate children and the forthcoming citizens of the nation struggling to develop.
