Discovering oneself
On the occasion of the eleventh Pankunwar Firodia memorial lecture held on June 2, Dr A H Salunke attributed the decline of Hindu society to Karma Siddhant’ (after effects of your deeds in the previous birth). According to him this philosophy entered Hindu culture after the Vedic times and resulted in casteism and communism. Remarked he, “People now tend to attribute their failures to the will of God and not to their lack of determination and efforts.” Lamenting the confusion prevalent in our times he emphasised that now was not the time to debate the existence of God, but to follow the teachings of Lord Buddha. He further pointed out the paradox that both Buddhism and Jainism did not believe in the concept of God and yet Gautam Buddha and Bhagwan Mahavir had been made into gods. Summing up the discussion, Vasant Bapat suggested that all thinking people should introspect to discover themselves.
In an effort to spread goodwill and Krishna Consciousness, ISKCON held a cultural programme on June 6. Attended by many, the programme included kirtans in the praise of the Lord, and lectures by the bhakts of the ISKCON temple. A lecture by Radhagopinath Das, emphasised on the importance of the Bhagwad Gita in today’s materialistic world and the essence of realising Lord Krishna. The kids of the Bhakt Pralhad school put up a play depicting the meeting of Lord Krishna with his friend Sudama from the Mahabharata. Another play put up by the ISKCON Youth Forum (IYF) also based on the Mahabharata were the highlights of the evening. Made for each other
June 7 saw parents and prospective brides and grooms descend upon Nehru Memorial Hall to give the eligible sons and daughters a chance to find their suitable partners in life and get acquainted. Organised by the Sindhu Progressive Matrimonial Organisation, Pimpri, it is a part of an ongoing process to include the names of over 500 eligible boys and girls from all over the country. According to them nearly 70 proposals have already been settled and confirmed within the year.
Unity in diversity
With communal passions on the rise it is always a welcome sight when people get together to exhort their fellow countrymen to be united inspite of the diversity. The Haji Ghulam Mohammed Azam Education Trust and the All India Message of Humanity Movement organised a function at MCCI on June 8 to further the message of peace and brotherhood. Speaking on, “The present Indian scenario and the duty of an Indian citizen,” Maulana Abul Hassan Ali Naqvi pointed out that great powers like the Roman and Persian empires had fallen because of lack of unity. Therefore it was imperative for India and Indians that they had the Payame Insaniyat (the spirit of brotherhood) be spread to the furthest corners of the country.
Also speaking on the occasion was veteran Congressman and Gandhian Balasaheb Bharde who lamented that inspite of a plethora of thinkers and philosophers the message of peace had not been disseminated as required. Both were felicitated by the president of HGMAE, Munawar A Peerbhoy.
