Sohrabuddin Remarks: CPI asks EC to disqualify Modi

CPI urged the EC to disqualify the Guj CM Narendra Modi from contesting the polls for his speech justifying the killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh.

CPI on Friday urged the Election Commission to disqualify Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi from contesting the polls for his speech justifying the killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh.

The demand was made by a delegation led by Gurudas Dasgupta, leader of CPI group in the Lok Sabha, when it met Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswamy in New Delhi.

“It is a clear incitement to violence, misuse of religion for political ends and shameless defence of an act of murder and as such constitutes violation of the Model Code of

Conduct,” said a memorandum submitted to the EC.

Drawing the attention of the Commission to Modi’s speech at Magrol on December four, the delegation urged the EC to disqualify Modi from contesting the poll and take punitive

measures as per law against him.

Besides Dasgupta, the memorandum was signed by C K Chandrappan, Deputy Leader of the party in the Lok Sabha and D Raja, leader of the party in the Rajya Sabha.

Taking note of reports, the EC had issued a notice to the Chief Minister asking him to reply by 11 am on Saturday.
