Soli J. Sorabjee was today elected the chairman of the 56th session of the UN Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights in Geneva. The sub-committee is the main subsidiary body of the Commission on Human Rights.
The sub-committee holds its sessions every year for three weeks between July and August in Geneva.
It comprises 26 independent experts in the field of human rights who are elected by the Commission. In addition to the members, the annual session is attended by over 1,000 observers.
The main function of the sub-commission is to undertake studies on human rights issues and make recommendations during its annual session.
