The United Nations is keenly watching developments in Nepal and is willing to play any role to solve the political crisis, said Lakhdar Brahimi, special envoy to Secretary General Kofi Annan. Talking to the media at the end of the three-member team’s six-day visit, Brahimi, however, did not state whether the UN wanted to play mediator of facilitator.

He said that during his discussions with the diplomatic community, it emerged that all of them share the UN’s concerns over the deteriorating situation. Brahimi said the situation in Nepal was “not beyond reach” and that an urgent solution was required. The solution depends on three critical elements—return to constitutional order and multi-polar democracy, an end to hostilities and an inclusive national dialogue towards a negotiated solution to the underlying causes of conflict, he said.
