With apparently cases of scams involving certain Army personnel in his mind, Army Chief Gen Deepak Kapoor on Tuesday said “some instances” in recent past had “brought down the image” of the force, which was a matter of concern. “There have been some instances which have brought down the image of the Army in the eyes of the public,” the Army Chief said while talking to reporters on the occasion of Army Day.

He did not elaborate, but he was apparently referring to alleged scams involving some Army personnel. The cases, which came to light recently, include alleged pilferage of items procured by the Army, including tents and eggs.

Northern Command Chief Lt Gen H S Panag has ordered a court of inquiry into 23 cases of alleged scams.

“We are concerned….we will try to maintain the image of the Army, which is held in high regard,” Gen Kapoor said.

Gen Kapoor said the force had successfully faced challenges and there was need to “be ready” to take on any future challenges. He noted that several militants had surrendered to security forces, which was encouraging.

On the shortage of personnel in the Army, Gen Kapoor said Defence Minister A K Antony had assured him that the force’s demands to make it more attractive to recruits will be considered and eventually fulfilled. For ex-servicemen, he said pension benefits will be amended in the Sixth Pay Commission.

Kapoor, who reviewed a parade from eight infantry regiments and one TA Batallion and gave away gallantry awards to 16 people (five posthumously), also announced that the Army College of Medical Science in Delhi Cantt will commence this year with admission starting from July first.
