
AHMEDABAD, June 11: AICC president Sonia Gandhi, who visited the cyclone-hit areas of Bhuj and Kandla on Thursday, exhorted party workers to begin relief activities in right earnest. She may visit the areas once again.
After arriving at Bhuj airport in the morning, she drove down to Kandla rightaway to visited the port area and Rambag Hospital in Gandhidham. Later, she visited the Harijan-dominated Ganeshnagar area of the town. At Kandla, she inquired about the damage to the port and the loss of life. AICC general secretary Meira Kumar, treasurer Ahmed Patel, secretary Vats and leader of the opposition Amarsinh Chaudhary accompanied her. The AICC chief could not visit Jamnagar. The leaders accompanying Sonia announced the formation of seven committees to look after relief camps, surveys, hospitals, orphans, distribution and monitor government relief.
It has also set up a relief centre at Gandhidham (phone no 31287). AICC treasurer Ahmed Patel has granted Rs 25 lakh from the Relief Committee for operations. ENS adds from Jamnagar: C D Patel, who stayed back at Jamnagar, alleged that the Government had failed to take precautionary measures.
