Sourav keen to break Eden jinx

The euphoria over Sourav Ganguly’s sensational comeback is still far from dying down.

The euphoria over Sourav Ganguly’s sensational comeback is still far from dying down. But the former Indian captain will have a few old scores to settle when he walks out to bat at the Eden on Thursday.

The 34-year-old batsman has had his share of success, but he is yet to enthral the crowds in his hometown, having failed to put up a good knock every time he’s played a one-day match at the Eden.

After skipping the Indian team’s net session this afternoon, Ganguly admitted to mediapersons back at his residence that it’s high time he came up with a big, match-winning knock here. “I know I have not done well in all the one-dayers I played here. So, I am really looking forward to make amends this time round. I am eagerly waiting to go out there and score a huge knock. It’s a century that I want here, that will be great,” said a candid Ganguly, two days ahead of the India-Sri-Lanka day-night ODI.

Ganguly has played three ODIs at this historic venue, and has come up with modest scores of 48, 42 and 36 — an underperformance for a batsman who has over 10,000 ODI runs against his name in a career spanning 11 years.

“We played against the West Indies. With the World Cup coming up now, it’s very important that we keep up the good work. The idea here is to get the momentum going in the Sri Lanka series as well, so that we can confidently go into the World Cup,” explained the left-hander.

Ganguly is likely to open with the explosive Robin Uthappa in Thursday’s match as part of Greg Chappell’s hunt for the ideal opening pair.

Ganguly was dropped from the India-South Africa ODI played here in November 2005, in which the Proteas thrashed India by 10 wickets. His last appearance in ODIs was the India-Pakistan Platinum Jubilee match in which he scored a 99-ball 48. Before that, Ganguly had scored a 42 in India’s win over England in 2001-02, preceded by a 36-run cameo against underdogs Kenya back in 1998.
