New Zealand medium-fast bowler Chris Martin has repaid the faith shown in him by coach John Bracewell after taking 10 wickets in the second Test against South Africa on Sunday.
Martin captured his first 10-wicket haul as South Africa suffered a late second innings collapse to close on 277 for six on the fourth day of the second Test.
But the 29-year-old only earned his place in the team after fast bowler Shane Bond suffered stress fractures to his back. Earlier in the season he was not even in the frame after Ian Butler was called in to play Pakistan, while Michael Mason was waiting in the wings.
‘‘He was recommended by his peers, really. Many said he was particularly good at bowling to left-handers and South Africa has plenty of them,’’ said Bracewell. ‘‘He has backed up our faith with some fantastic bowling.’’
Martin, who sported a ponytail when he started out in first-class cricket, was called into the second Test squad after an impressive domestic season for Canterbury and a good match for New Zealand A against Sri Lanka A while the first Test was being drawn in Hamilton last week.
