Congress moved a breach of privilege notice against Samajwadi Party leader Abu Azmi for allegedly pushing and manhandling its members, including women, during the introduction of the Women’s Reservation Bill in Rajya Sabha.

Congress Member Jayanthi Natarajan moved a privilege motion under Rule 187 complaining about Azmi’s “unprecedented, unwarranted and condemnable behaviour.”

In the complaint to Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari, Natarajan said Azmi moved towards Union Law Minister H R Bharadwaj, pushing aside other Ministers who were sitting there.

She claimed the Samajwadi Party Member also pushed and manhandled her and other women Members who were standing there.

“Abu Azmi pushed and shoved me physically in his attempt to attack the Law Minister. Finally, he had to be stopped with the assistance of other Members,” Natarajan said. The motion sought referring the matter to the Privileges Committee for necessary action against Azmi.

Addressing the AICC briefing, Natarajan said: “The absolutely atrocious behaviour of Samajwadi Party reduced Parliamentary decency in Rajya Sabha to a joke… In the history of Rajya Sabha, never before has such a scene been witnessed. It is a sad day for democracy and for Rajya Sabha.”

She said the Government, with the support of its allies, has fulfilled one of the most basic promises made in the Common Minimum Programme (CMP) by introducing the Bill in Rajya Sabha.
