The police on Monday conducted a raid at the office of SP strongman and MP Atiq Ahmed, whose younger brother and former MLA Ashraf has been named in a case relating to unlawful possession of a house.

The raid was conducted this afternoon at the office premises of Atiq in the Chakia locality from where a computer, some audio cassettes and documents were seized, SSP K S Pratap Kumar said.

He said the raid followed an FIR in which complainant Bano had alleged that Ashraf had driven her out of a house belonging to her and handed it over to one of his confidants. Acting on a tip-off that Ashraf was camping at his MP brother’s office, the police raided the premises and though nobody was present there at that time, a number of things were seized.

The action follows a recent announcement by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati that people who “have suffered” during the previous SP rule for fear of “repression” should come forward with their complaints.

Both Atiq, who represents Phoolpur Lok Sabha seat, and Ashraf, who failed to retain Allahabad West in Assembly elections, are also named in a number of criminal cases.
