The Urdu University Bill scheduled to be tabled by the Samajwadi Party in the UP Assembly on Wednesday, was deferred, with the Congress objecting to the appointment of Urban Development and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md Azam Khan as lifetime Chancellor of the University. ‘‘We are not going to table the Urdu University Bill today and now it will be tabled on November 24,’’ said Azam Khan, when the Assembly Speaker directed him to go ahead with Wednesday’s agenda. This is the second time the government has decided against going ahead with the Bill. The Mulayam government had similarly deferred tabling the Bill in the previous Assembly session. Later, the government got it passed in the Cabinet meeting and forwarded it to the Governor, who however, sent it to Rashtrapati Bhawan, where it is pending the President’s approval. With Wednesday’s development, a fresh session of the House will have to be convened on November 24. ‘‘The formal decision to convene a fresh session will be taken in the Business Advisory Committee meeting on Thursday,’’ said an official.‘‘By moving the amendment today, we are signalling to the minority community that we aren’t against setting up the Urdu University but are opposing Azam Khan as life-time chancellor,’’ claimed Congress Legislature Party leader, Pramod Tewari.
