As a result of sharp differences within the All-Party Hurriyat Conference (APHC), the Executive Council meeting of the umbrella group scheduled today was postponed.

APHC spokesperson Sheikh Abdul Rashid said the council could not meet because most members were busy with other work. This was not the first time that council meeting has been postponed, he said, adding it was not an extraordinary meeting as reported in the press.

The J-K government had promised that all detenues, not involved in any serious offence, would be released. Currently, 560 persons are detained in and outside state jails under the provisions of the Act. (ENS)

The differences within the seven-member council intensified yesterday when People’s Conference (PC) chairman Sajjad Gani Lone alleged that Syed Ali Shah Geelani, who represents the Jamaat-e-Islami, was the Centre’s agent and responsible for his father Abdul Gani Lone’s assassination, last year.

In a letter to APHC chairman Prof Abdul Gani Bhat, Geelani demanded action against the PC for fielding proxy candidates in the last Assembly elections. He said he would not attend any meeting till action was taken against the PC.

Hurriyat sources said the meeting was slated to discuss ways to counter Geelani’s allegations but had to be postponed as Jamaat had called an emergency meeting. Sources said the allegations and counter-allegations exchanged by Geelani and Lone had effectively ended any hopes of reconciliation attempted by the Hurriyat.

Meanwhile, the Jamaat-e-Islami on Wednesday ignored the Lone-Geelani spat saying Geelani’s reply yesterday to the allegations were enough and there was no need for the Jamaat to add anything. Today’s executive meeting described as a ‘‘brainstorming’’ session dwelt mostly on the impending election for a new Amir (chief). Polls for the post will be held on July 27.
