July 1: The Deputy Director of Education (Greater Mumbai) J M Abhyankar has pulled up KC College of Arts, Science & Commerce, near Churchgate, for violating the fixed schedule for first year junior college (FYJC) admissions this year.

Disobeying the state government directive which specifically stated that the first merit list should only be put up on July 2, the KC college administration fixed the date of the first FYJC merit list for June 30.

Talking to Express Newsline on Tuesday, Deputy Director Abhyankar said: “On receiving a complaint about the irregularities in KC, I have given a memo to the college to seek an explanation on why they have not followed the proper admission schedule.”

The students wing of BJP, Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, has also decided to take a delegation to the state education department at Mantralaya to highlight this irregularity and press for transparency in the current admission year.

“According to the state order, only the distribution of FYJC forms should be carried out on June 27, 28 and 30. The first merit list should only be put up in all the colleges on July 2. Hence, we were shocked when KC college put up a notice signed by the principal stating that the merit list will be finalised on June 30,” said the Colaba President of BJYM, Vineet S Kanchan.Apart from Kanchan, other BJYM activists like Ashish Waghe, Jayesh Chonkar and Niranjan Prabhudesai also played a role in exposing this irregularity.

“We will now urge state officials to either take stern action against the college or immediately bring in transparency for the sake of students,” they said.

The Principal of KC, N A Bhatija was not available for comment.Ironically, though, on June 26, over 100 city college principals had met at KC college itself to chalk out the admission schedule in the presence of the deputy director of education. The Principal of Bhavans College (Andheri), D B Kadam, said: “At the meeting, which was also attended by Principal Bhatija, it was clearly decided what the admission schedule should be. When some of the colleges wanted to alter the admission programme, Abhyankar had clearly refused.”
