Mumbai, February 23: The touring Sri Lankan under-19 team got a taste of Indian pace and surely it tasted anything but sweet. Board President’s U-19 XI speedsters Mrityunjay Tripathi (5-37) and local lad Swapnil Hazare (3-11) rattled the Lankan batsmen into submission, bundling them for a measly 58 and force a follow-on on the second day of the three-day cricket tie at the Brabourne Stadium on Tuesday.
Earlier, skipper Asif Murtuza declared the home team’s first innings for 280 for seven. Vineet Saxena emerged the top scorer for the home team remaining unbeaten on 68 (142b, 214 min, 12×4).
The next two batsmen too returned quickly. While Tripathi struck again to have Chamara Silva caught by Sorashish Lahiri, Hazare had left-handed opener Jerome Fernandoclean bowled on 4.
All-rounder Pubudu Senevirathne was the only one to offer some resistance to the Indian pace attack and was the last to depart. He had his stumps uprooted by Hazare when on 29.
The Lankan second innings however was more composed as they finished the day at a healthy 162 for three. In fact, they crossed the their first innings score in the tenth over, and included 13 boundaries. Skipper Fernando, who was the most impressive, was unfortunate to miss his half-century by a run, thanks to a brilliant diving catch by leg-spinner CM Shyam off his own bowling.
At stumps Gajanayake (33) and Chamara Silva (35) were at the crease.
Coach Krishnamachari Srikkant despite expressing delight at the team’s display wasn’t willing to undermine the abilities of the Lankans. “No team can be taken lightly. And they have showed it in their second innings.”
The former Indian opener felt that Tripathi and Hazare hold lot of promise terming them as “future prospects.”
