Amidst a call given by the NGOs for indefinite closure of South Garo Hills district from Tuesday, to demand the removal of Deputy Commissioner (DC) Renilla D Marak and Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) S R Marak for their alleged involvement in siphoning funds.

The state Government has decided to provide information on developmental schemes in all block headquarters to ensure transparency.

The Garo Students Union (GSU), Baghmara Mothers’ Union, Youth Development Vigilance Committee, Church leaders and Nokmas (Headmen) have alleged that the Maraks were instrumental in misappropriation of funds meant for the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) and mid-day meal projects in South Garo Hills district. Denying the allegation, the officers had threatened to take legal step against those who accused them.

However, this only enraged the NGOs and they decided to launch an agitation by calling a complete closure of South Garo Hills district on Tuesday.

The state Government has not reacted to the demand of the NGOs as yet. But Deputy CM Mukul Sangma said the Government has decided to direct all the block headquarters to start displaying a list of all developmental projects undertaken by the Government. He said this would ensure “transparency”.

Sangma expressed hope that this decision would help the Government implement the projects in a right manner.
