PUNE, Sept 23: S Ramaswamy of Mumbai City and Mamta Prabhu of Thane were given the place of pride in the men’s and women’s section respectively of the State ranking table tennis championship being hosted by Symbiosis Spa at its complex from September 25-30.

Aditya Mahagaonkar of Mumbai Suburban and Mamta Prabhu heads the seedings in the junior boys and girls sections.

The meet assumes importance as it would serve as the barometer to select the Maharashtra A’ and B’ teams for the National championship.

The Maharashtra State Table Tennis Association (MSTTA) holds a total of eight ranking tournaments with Pune being the fifth one, which enables paddlers to claim points to secure a berth in either of the teams.

A total prize money of Rs 41,000 will be at stake, with the winners of the men’s section standing to gain Rs 4,000 while the women’s would receive Rs 3,000.

Cash prizes would also be given to all eight groups — namely men, women, junior boys and girls, sub-junior boys and girls and cadet boys.

The championship has received an enthusiastic response with 656 entries.
