Union Rural Development Minster Raghuvansh Prasad Singh on Tuesday put the onus on the state governments for effective implementation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee (NREG) scheme . Recently, the draft CAG performance audit report had revealed shortcomings in the implementation of the UPA Government’s flagship job guarantee scheme.

“It is the duty of state Governments to enact NREG in letter and spirit and it should have to be ensured that utmost transparency is adopted during the entire process under the programme,” said Prasad while inaugurating the 8th Annual Editors Conference on Social Sector Issues in the capital. Prasad underlined the importance of transparency and accountability for desired outcomes of the rural development and poverty alleviation programmes of the Government.

Prasad also said that the Government would go ahead with its move to cover the entire country under the scheme by the start of the next financial year.
