MUMBAI, August 10: One person was crushed to death and three injured in a major landslide near Otur Village in Malshej Ghat on Sunday afternoon. According to police, the accident took place at 2.40 pm. Heavy rains is believed to have caused the landslide. Pune police control said that though only one body has been recovered from the accident site, casualties could be much higher. Public Works Department officials from Thane and Pune have rushed to the site to clear the boulders and make the road reasonably motorable.

Retd fire officials held in Uphaar case

NEW DELHI: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested two retired officials of the Delhi Fire Services against whom non-bailable warrants were issued by a city court in connection with the June 13 Uphaar Cinema fire tragedy, sources said here on Sunday. H S Panwar, then divisional fire officer, and Surinder Dutt, then station fire officer of Bhikaji Cama Place fire station, who had given fire clearance to the cinema management after an inspection on May 12, were arrested from their residences on Saturday night.

Landmine blast injures 13 policemen

KARIMNAGAR: Thirteen policemen were injured in a landmine blast triggered off by Naxalites of the outlawed Peoples’ War Group (PWG) near Machipeta village in Karimnagar district of Andhra Pradesh on Sunday. The police party was carrying out a routine combing operation when the mine went off. Of the injured, the condition of head constable Srinivas and constables Lakshmipathi and Ravinder was serious, police said.

18 missing fishermen return

PARADIP: Eighteen of the 40 fishermen who were reported missing in the Bay of Bengal have returned while bodies of six have been recovered so far, according to official sources. The fishermen had ventured into the sea in seven boats on August 2. Sixteen of them are yet to be traced. While five bodies were found floating on the Rajnagar coast in Kendrapara district, three of the boats with 18 fishermen hit the coast in Andhra Pradesh, the sources said.

World body honours Indian scientist

NEW DELHI: The International Union of History and Philosophy of Science (IUHPS) has approved the creation of an international commission on science with Deepak Kumar of India as its first president. Deepak is known internationally for his books and research papers on development of science during the colonial period. He is currently working with the National Institute of Science, Technology and Development Studies in New Delhi.

One killed in Faridabad blast

FARIDABAD: A teenaged boy was killed and two others seriously injured in an explosion in a godown of a factory in old Faridabad on Saturday evening, police said. The blast occurred due to reaction of some chemicals stored in the godown for making black mehendi, they said. The injured have been admitted to the hospital. The deceased has been identified as Somu.

ABSU nod to 36-hour Assam bandh

GUWAHATI: The All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) on Saturday gave a go ahead to the 36-hour Assam bandh from Wednesday, disregarding the Assam government’s offer for holding a tripartite talk on Tuesday to solve the tangle. Terming the announcement as `fake’, the students body said that in its last executive committee meeting, it had decided to go ahead with the proposed bandh from Wednesday in support of their demand for a separate Bodoland state.
