PINEHURST, June 19: World number one David Duval and Phil Mickelson matched Payne Stewart for a share of the lead late in the second round of the 99th US Open here on Friday.
Duval and Mickelson fired par-70 while Stewart was one of the few to break par on Pinehurst Country Club’s overpowering inverted saucer greens. Stewart’s early one-under par 69 put the 1991 US Open winner at three-under 137 after 36 holes, a lead that stood as firm as the sloping greens of Pinehurst’s number two course, which took a toll on everyone.
Paul Goydos was three-under after nine.
