CHANDIGARH, Oct 12: Students of the Punjab University Department of Evening Studies today observed a strike to protest the non-holding of elections in their department. The striking students, led by former president of the PUSC Council Munish Anand, later led the students to the residence of the Vice-Chancellor.

Students are demanding early elections for the constitution of the students’ council of the Department of Evening Studies. Prior to this, the department had proposed that a consultative committee consisting of students who had topped in their examination would be constituted. Nearly 350 students had written to the university, opposing the proposal, following which the Syndicate decided that an elected council would be formed. The agitating students included Sanjay Singh, general secretary of the PU Students’ Union, and Harpreet Singh, former secretary of the council of the Department of Evening Studies. Meanwhile, Anand has gone on a hunger strike for the early acceptance of the demand.

Meanwhile, Students of the Department of Marketing, Sales Promotion and Sales Management, Government College, Sector 46 organised a freshers welcome function here today. According to a press statement by Shashi Jain, coordinator, vocational courses of the college, an Antakshri competition was also organised which was won by a team of B.A (II) students. Salma Khatoon, a student of B.A (II) compered the programme while the principal, Major D. P. Singh presided over the function.
