SURAT, Jan 17: The Surat Urban Development Authority (SUDA) has decided to partly finance the construction of a bridge between the Nana and Mota Varachha areas of the city, build a weir-cum-causeway over the Mindhola River, set up a Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) at Kadodara and earmark land for educational purposes under its jurisdiction.

These were among the six important resolutions that were passed at a meeting of the urban development authority held here in the city last week under the chairmanship of Arvind Godiwala.

A release issued here stated that SUDA would contribute 35 per cent of the estimated cost of the proposed Rs 20 crore Nana Varachha-Mota Varachha bridge, whose construction is to begin shortly. Besides connecting the two areas on either side of the Tapi, it will also help ease the traffic problem considerably. The construction of the bridge was first proposed by the Surat Municipal Corporation.

In another major resolution, the SUDA has decided to construct a weir-cum-causeway over Mindhola River in the southern part of its jurisdiction. According to Godiwala, with the population of the city increasing rapidly in the past decade, more than 30 villages, including Sachin, located south of the city will get drinking water after the Rs 10 crore project was completed.

SUDA has also decided to earmark 60,000 sq mts of the total 1,91,400 sq mts land reserved for sewage disposal works, in order to construct a CETP at Kadodara. The release stated that the proposed CETP will treat wastes of as many as 65 industries — mostly dyeing and printing — thus providing a safer environment for the villagers residing in the vicinity.

In a decision taken to encourage higher education within its limits, SUDA has decided to reserve land around Bhimpore for the construction of educational complexes apart from the present 3.16 lakh sq mts of land already reserved for educational purposes. The statement said that the Bhimpore land was identified for its tranquility and also because the salinity of the land did not suit agriculture.

On the housing front, the SUDA has decided to allot 487 plots land each measuring 25 sq mts for the economically weaker section. Land measuring 21,742 sq mts in and around Vesu near the city has been reserved for this purpose. Each house would cost between Rs 40,000 and 45,000, the release said, adding that those interested will have to pay 10 percent of the cost as initial deposit, while the remaining amount could be sought from HUDCO.
