Manchester United and Arsenal could end up fighting out the English title in a playoff match if the top two sides finish the season exactly level, the Premier League said on Thursday. United lead Arsenal by three points at the top of the Premier League following their 2-2 draw at Highbury on Wednesday, although champions Arsenal have a game in hand. United have four games left to play and Arsenal five, with Arsenal’s goal difference currently one better.

The Premier League published on its website on Thursday the rule that would apply if the two sides finish level. “If at the end of the season either the league champions or the clubs to be relegated or the question of qualification for other competitions cannot be determined because two or more clubs are equal on points, goal difference and goals scored, the clubs concerned shall play off one or more deciding league matches on neutral grounds, the format, timing and venue of which shall be determined by the board,” the ruling body said in a statement.
