NEW DELHI, December 7: PGDAV College reclaimed the glittering Zakir Husain Trophy after a gap of two years when they defeated Jamia Millia Islamia 9-8 in sudden-death tie-breaker in the final of the 12th Zakir Husain memorial football tournament at Ambedkar Stadium here today.

The match was played at a fast pace and both teams matched one another in almost all departments of the game.

PGDAV took the lead in the seventh minute when Man Mohan Singh headed the ball home from close range. Six minutes later, Mohd Mobin dodged past an onrushing Jamia Millia Islamia goalkeeper and place the ball in to increase the lead.

Stung by the early reverse, Jamia Millia boys re-organised themselves and went on the attack to reduce the margin. They made several efforts in that direction and were finally rewarded with a goal in the 39th minute when Imad reduced the margin.

After change of ends, Jamia Millia kept the pressure on. In the 70th minute stopper-back Pushpender Kundu brought down Amarjeet Singh Sahni in the penalty area. The resultant penalty-kick was converted by Mohammad Nadir of Jamia Millia to draw level at 2-2. The teams remained at 2-2 at the end of regulation period.

There was no extra-time played and in the tie-breaker penalty-shootout, PGDAV proved more lucky and won by 7-6.

The shoot-out proved to be thrilling and a close affair as the advantage shifted frequently from one team to the other. For the winners, Vijay Singh, Bhaskar Rawat, Mohd Mobin, Kuldeep Bhandari, Man Mohan Singh, Avneet Singh and Parkash Negi converted penalties. For Jamia Millia, Fardeen, Mohd Nadir, Mohd Jawaid, Sanjiv Nair, Sumit Kaushik and Nasibullah were the successful marksmen.

Prizes were given away by O P Malhotra, a senior Director of Physical Education of Delhi University and a former state footballer. PGDAV had won the trophy five times in a row from 1991 to 1995 before Zakir Husain College made it two in a row during 1996 and 1997.

Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangthan (KVS) outwitted Lal Bahadur Shastri Club by eight wickets in an inaugural match of the All-India Shiv Kumar memorial cricket tournament at Ramjas sports complex.

Brief Scores: KVS: 130 for 2 (Vishal Razdan 41, Suresh Tanwar 34 not out, Jitender Pandey 28 not out, Mayank Sharma 2 for 34). LB Shastri: 129 for 9 (Karun Jethi 44, Vishal Tyagi 25 not out, Mritunja 3 for 23, Maninder Singh 2 for 11).
