Sugar mills: Plea for probe by CVC

The judge also sought the agreements made with the three private companies, who bought the three sugar mills. Details were also sought about the money given by the companies and when the possession of the mills was handed over to them.

Submitting before Justice Swatanter Kumar of the court, the counsel for the Samiti while criticising the investigations in the case stated that the same, which had started on a right note, had been allegedly scuttled after the IG had started analysing the investigations made by the AIG.

The Samiti was instrumental in initiating the investigations in the sale of sugar mills to private parties, after it handed over a memorandum to the inspecting judge of Hoshiarpur district courts Justice V.K. Jhanji, following which the High court took up the case.

The counsel for the Samiti further stated that since the officials involved were senior functionaries in the present government, the IGs report had bailed them out, which gave the impression that the government was not capable of prosecuting high officials. Thus, he further stated, the High Court should not allow the investigations in the case to be scuttled and sought the handing over of the same to the CVC. He also pointed out that none of the accused officials had been arrested in the case.
