S.A.S. NAGAR, Jan 8: The Delhi left-arm seamer Amit Suman combined well with M Tripathi to create havoc with an indecisive Punjab batting on the second day of the four-day M A Chidambaram Trophy (under 19) cricket match between the Cooch Behar champions and the Rest of India here at the PCA Stadium today.

short article insert Suman picked up 6 for 57 while Tripathi had 4 for 53, vindicating their skipper Niraj Patel’s decision of asking Punjab to bat first on a seaming track, made more difficult by the cloud cover, as play finally began this afternoon after the entire day’s play was washed out yesterday due to rain.

After Punjab were shot out for a miserable 151 in their first innings, the Rest of India batsmen cashed in on a directionless Punjab seam-attack to get to 63 for 2 when bad light forced stumps to be drawn for the day.

Suman, with his high-arm action, bowled his heart out today. Encouraged by the lift and carry from the wicket, Suman bowled his seamers intelligently. On the other hand, Tripathi was getting prodigous swing movement. The four wickets he picked up were a just reward for his persistence in moving his big outswingers from the leg-middle to the off stump as batsmen perished behind the stumps.

Punjab’s batting-mainstay in the Cooch Behar Trophy, southpaw Yuvraj Singh, held centre-stage once again. He played in his charateristic fashion, punishing anything loose, but became a victim of a doubtful umpiring decision. Yuvraj scored 56 (71 balls; seven fours). In fact, Punjab were a comfortable 59 for 1 when opener Munish Sharma paid heavy price for his folly of leaving the crease after playing the ball. Then on, Punjab lost control. They were saved somewhat by the 26-run ninth-wicket stand between Sarandeep and Pankaj Behl but a total of 151 meant their seam bowlers had to emulate the Rest bowlers.

Though Gulzarinder picked up two wickets (one off an amazing catch by Munish at short-leg), they allowed things to drift.

Brief Scores
Punjab (Ist innings): 151 (Yuvraj Singh 56, Munish Sharma 21, Pankaj Behl 19, Sarandeep Singh 17; Amit Suman 6-57, M Tripathi 4-53). Rest of Bhatia 28 n.o., Saurabhesh Lahri 19; Gulzarinder Singh 2-30).
